The core of the idea sprung from intensive consideration about rice and its low productivity per square meter, relative to other grains, which has resulted in its supply scarcity. Considering rice is the staple food for the majority of Indonesians and, considering the nature of the Indonesian people as being ‘gemah ripah loh jinawi’, it is not enough to improve the rice growing techniques. What is required is a paradigm shift in the “culture” of rice growing within this country. Understanding how to improve crop yields and shorten growing cycles is useless unless “cultural” considerations are taken into account.
New techniques have been developed that take into account the long standing traditions of the rice farmers. In test cases tremendous increases in the productivity of rice plants may be obtained. The increased productivity depends on several requirements; such as water supply and irrigation, seeds and proper cultivation, the right amount of fertilizers, and traditional cultivation techniques compatible with local wisdom.
